“Historic preservation is not simply saving old buildings; it is about preserving the story and spirit of a place.” – Richard Moe
From the Board of Directors to Our Community:
Each of us joined the Board of Directors of Visalia Heritage because we know the vital importance of our past, present, and future. Visalia has many great stories to tell, from varied perspectives, but we have no central place to share the importance of this vast history. The Tulare County Museum does an excellent job of presereving regional history, and it includes a thoughtful section on Visalia’s past. But Visalia’s story is bigger, deeper, and still unfolding. It deserves a home of its own–a space where our unique local narratives can be explored, expanded, and celebrated to the fullest extent.
We imagine a space that not only honors Visalia’s roots but also brings to life the diverse experiences of the people who have shaped, and continue to shape, our city.
This center will serve as a hub for education, reflection, and celebration. It will showcase the traditions of the Yokuts and Western Mono peoples, highlight the evolution of our city, and provide a space for community events and exhibitions.
To bring this vision to life, we aim to raise $6 million for the purchase and renovation of the site. Your support can make a significant difference in preserving the stories and artifacts that have shaped Visalia’s identity and community over nearly 200 years; providing a venue for learning that connects residents and visitors of all ages to our city’s diverse heritage; and creating a welcoming space for gatherings, performances, and cultural exchanges as the story of Visalia and our own place within it continues to unfold.
